My Ancestry:
James: son of William and Jean [Jane] Paton, immigrated to New Zealand, they arrived in Lyttelton (Port of Christchurch) on 29 Jan 1860, on the ship "Robert Small". Their name spelt PATON in Scotland, became PATTEN on arrival in New Zealand. James with his wife Elizabeth and children, James 7, Peter 5, Jane 3, David 1. On shipping records he was entered as a Farm labourer, and earlier census records show that he was employed by his father on their farm in Forfarshire, which is later to become Angus.Occupation has since been entered as Carpenter or Shipwright. James & Elizabeth go on to raise 12 children in NZ, one of which, Charles Alfred, is my grand father. Charles Alfred, migrates to Melbourne Australia, from where another story starts…
What we known of the remaining Scots:
George: son of William and Jean Paton. Per 1841 Census: shows George at about 21 at home in Constitution St, Dundee, with Mother, Father & Siblings.[H.F’s records show: Census Records 1881, a Will for George Paton. Copy held by H.F.]
Per 1851 Census: George lived at 33 Constitution Street, Dundee with wife Ann, sons William and David, and 3 servants. In 1871 George was a gardener at American Muir, Mains, Angus with his wife Ann and 7 children. In 1881 he farmed 150 acres (employing 3 men) at American Muir with Ann and children David, Peter, and Isabella.
Jean: daughter of William and Jean Paton. Marries a David Cruickshank, their daughter Elizabeth Cruickshank marries Charles Wallace, their son John Wallace marries Bridget Raferty, their daughter Elizabeth Wallace marries William Fitzpatrick, their son Gary Fitzpatrick is born in 1962 and makes contact with us NZ/Australian Patten’s 2005. Gary data is sparse with no detail, but offers in, his sparse terms, that our William b1793 is the son of Henry b1738, who is the son of William b-abt 1710, who inturn is the son of John b-abt 1670.
The reason for this posting:
Is to ask for anyone’s input into expanding our knowledge of the other Scots listed as living at Constitution Street [1841], I’m sure there are some great stories to be found.
Likewise we would dearly love to confirm & expand our knowledge of William b1793 ancestors
