Philip, I found a mention of your Garret Van Camp in the Short Hill`s Rebellion in ancestry.com concuring with the basic info you have in your message and mention of a book for a source called "The Insurrection in the Short Hills in 1838" by E. Cruikshank, in Ontario Historical Society Papers & Records 1907. There are alot of Ontario, Canada website`s listed in Cyndi`s List at www.cyndislist.com also in the ships list web site`s where you might find the ship that Garret was on.
Ship`s mentioned are the Marquis of Hastings and Canton where hired in 1839 to transport convicts, Garret is mentioned on the one with Ship Master Hy I Naylor. Sailed from Portsmouth England on 17 Mar 1839 with 240 male convicts. Both ships first stopped in Canada arrived at Spithead a stretch of water in the Eastern Solvent of Great Britain, between the entrance to Portsmouth Harbor and the Isle of Wight, were they picked up more convicts before then sailing to VDL. Arrived VDL Tasmania on 23 Jul 1839 with 233 male convicts. 128 days at sea
As for trial transcript`s or gov. record`s you can find the info. about various Canadaian gov. web site`s in Cyndi`s List or poss. a web site about the Short Hill`s Rebellion part in the Patriot`s War of 1837.
My intrest in in the earlier part of the Rebellion at Montgomery`s Tavern north of Toronto where Samuel Lount participitated and was hung with Peter Matthews 12 April 1838 in Toronto for his involvement as a leader under William Lyon MacKinzie.
I am kinda courious as to where your Garret Van Camp came from the Ontario Loyalist Van Camp`s or the N.Y. Van Campen`s notice some Ontario Van Camp`s came to Mi. around 1840`s or so. There were alot on families left Canada via. Mi. after the Rebellion especially if they were connected to or related to people connected to the Rebellion. Had to look at that surname and saw Pamala Foster`s, Van Camp`(en)s message`s. Did the Mi. Van Camp`s leave Canada for Mi. because of Garret`s involvement in the Short Hill`s Rebellion ? Is Garret somehow related to them ?

Good Luck,
Don
