Thomas Branch in the Patriot war 8th Zouaves

I have the Dept. of Agriculture report of 1867 that says that one of my ancestors served in the 8th Zouaves in the Patriot War. And he served 1 year 9 months. I would like to know more about what that War was and see if there is a record of his service.
What was the 8th Zouaves?
