On a recent trip to Harlan, IA, I visited the Shelby Co. Courthouse searching for the marriage license of Albert Julius Pattee and Elmira Jane Lytton, my Great-Grandparents. The ultimate goal of the search was to acquire my Great-Great Grandparents' names. I now know that my Great-Great Grandfather was Rudolph Pattee, however, my Great-Great Grandmother's name was not listed.
Albert Julius Pattee was born in Germany in 1854, and was sent to America at the age of nine to reside with an Uncle in Pottawattamie Co., IA. His brothers, Edward and Otto, would come over much later as young men in order to avoid service during the Franco-Prussian War (?).
We know very little about the past of these three men and are hoping someone can help us with our research. We originally thought the family was French, however, on every legal document we have found, the boys have listed German as their nationality. We originally believed they were from the Alsace-Lorrain region of France, which is still a posssibility.
