Cousins to the Rescue!
My gggrandfather Charles F Pattee was extremely cagey about where and when he was born - and even more cagey about where his parents were born. I have him in 3 censuses; in two of them he says he was born in Wisconsin, in one Illinois. Meanwhile his daughter, in three censuses, has her father born in Illinois, Iowa and Michigan. As for his parents, well - one time he leaves their birthplaces blank; one time he says "US" and Illinois; the third time he says Vermont and Pennsylvania.
The dates of his birth are 1852, 1854, 1856.
Charles got married in Iowa in 1875, and his daughter (my ggrand) was born in Nebraska in 1879.
He was in California by 1900 - probably much earlier, as his son Thomas was born there (if we can believe the censuses) in 1888. He worked as a well-driller in 1900, as a miner in 1910, and as a laborer in 1920. It seems he was having hard times, because at first he owned his house, then it was mortgaged, and the third time I'm not sure - but he was living in an entirely different place.
In Wisconsin, in 1860, there are no Pattees with sons Charles.(When I say "there are no . . ." I mean I have not found them in the census. They could have been missed by the census taker, the indexer, or by me!)
In Illinois, in 1860, there is a Charles age 13 (about 10 years older than my Charles) - son of (or anyway living with) Lorenzo Patee 51 b. Canada.
In Iowa, in 1860, there is a Charles V, age 4, son of Wallace Pattee 41 b. Canada. This looks pretty good to me - does anyone know any more about these people? All his brothers & sisters were born in Michigan. I think I ran across a listing that had this Charles as a teacher, which doesn't sound like my guy - but he was pretty changeable. Of course, Wallace was born in Canada - but it did occur to me that maybe my Charles was so cute about where his father was born because he wasn't actually born in the US.
Also in Iowa in 1860, there is a 9 year old male called something like (very difficult to make out) True. He is with Frederick 32 b. Vt and Ann. ???
In Michigan in 1860 there are two Charleses. One age 2, son of Albert 24 b. NY - a sailor. Another age 3, son of John R 26 b. Vt. This John R is the son of Calvin, grandson of Moses, so someone should know something about his son Charles, yes?
Grasping at straws, I also looked in Indiana and Ohio. Nobody in Indiana, but in Ohio there was a Charles, age 8, son of (or living with) Peater Patee 55 b. Mass.
If anyone can tell me anything about any of these people, I would be most grateful. Even if it's negative, it would help.
Thanks so much.
