Pattee name 1907 Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada

I am NOT related in any way to this name, but want to tell you why I am posting here. I am President of the Yarmouth County (NS) Museum & Archives and have been carrying out my own genealogical research for over 50 years.

For over 100 years we had direct ferry service to Yarmouth first from New York and Boston, then from Portland and Bar Harbor ME. Many people here, including me, have close relatives and friends in the New England part of the USA. In 2010, our provincial (American say state) government stopped funding this ferry service and we are now in our 3rd year without it, which has devastated our economy.

Here in Yarmouth, NS Canada where I live, I have come across the name of either T Q Pattee or George Q Pattee (what is the Q for?) who is shown on a 1907 business and residential directory of the Town of Yarmouth, NS, as the manager of the Grand Hotel, the largest and most famous hotel in town, which was built in 1894 and was demolished in 1967. Its replacement has been serving this area ever since. The Grand Hotel is well known in many circles for its attention to tourists coming from everywhere to see us.

For your information, Yarmouth NS is in the southernmost end of Nova Scotia, right across the Gulf of Maine from New England (Maine, Vermont, Mass, etc.) and the name Pattee is definitely NOT a name connected with Nova Scotia, so I was fascinated by WHO this man was, and how he happened to become the manager of such a prominent hotel. I read through all the Pattee postings that mentioned Canada and believe he must logically be a descendant of the immigrant Peter (1644-1724), but his clear family line eludes me. Since my records show him as a senior manager of a major hotel in 1907, I can only guess his age as likely to be between 40 and 50 years old, putting his birthdate at somewhere between 1857 and 1867 (presumably in the USA). I have no idea how long he served in this capacity but he must have been an important person in our small community (population in 1907 ca. 8,000).

I post this message for the interest of readers who may be able to track Mr. T Q (or George Q) Pattee. I suspect, but cannot verify, that he has a connection with the Pattee names in the Maine, Vermont, NH, etc. areas of the USA.

Can anyone clarify his identity and background for me? I believe this is the first reference to a Pattee being in Nova Scotia, Canada, that I have seen on this forum. Thank you very much for any information you can provide.

Richard Brezet
