Pattens from Nova Scotia to Minnesota

I am looking for information on a James Patten 1823-1905 in Nova Scotia to John and Mary Patten. He came to Minnesota in 1855 with his wife Mary Miller of Maine. They had three children Mary F., Ida May and Sarah Bell or Sarah Esther (as it is on the head stone.)
There is a Samuel Patten that also came a few weeks later and is listed in the censuses with James and Mary and could be a brother, cousin or uncle.
Due to James' death certificate we know that John and Mary Patten were born in Scotland, but after that the trail runs cold.
If this sounds familiar to anyone please let me know.
