SEEKING THE DECENDANTS OF OHIO PATTON/PATTEN, OF HOCKING CO. OHIO
Posted by: Berna David Hunter (ID *****9384) Date: June 05, 2004 at 11:07:45

The listing of the surname in some family records is Patten while in others the surname is spelled as Patton. In most census records the surname is listed as Patton, and for the sake of argument I will also.

William and Hannah HUNTER were the parents of my great-great-grandmother Louisa Ellenor HUNTER. It is my hope by finding the descendants of these PATTON siblings I will be able to glean some useful information about own elusive HUNTER family; Louisa, Hezekiah, Margaret, George, William H., Amanda, Hannah, and their parents.

There appears to be a strong PATTON, BAUGARDNER/BUMGARDNER family connection with this HUNTER family. Both the HUNTER and BAUGARDNER/BUMGARDNER families migrated through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and settling for a time in Hocking County, Ohio, then Butler and Carter county Missouri with most of the HUNTER family remaining there.

Lately I have been researching the BAUGARDNER/BUMGARDNER, PATTON, as well as my own HUNTER family histories and I believe can connect all three families through interfamily marriages or other records such as land and census records. All three of these families (HUNTER, BUMGARDNER and PATTON) were connected in one way or another. Other then the interfamily marriages HUNTER-to-BUMGARDNER or PATTON-to-BUMGARDNER, the best example of the family connections is the 1850 Green Hocking County, Ohio census, as well as the later censuses of this county. In the next county census my HUNTER family is listed close to these families.

A quick over view of the connections of these three families are: two of the sons of William and Hannah HUNTER, married BAUGARDNER/BUMGARDNER women. William H. HUNTER married Sarah Adeline BUMGARDNER, daughter of John and Rhoda BUMGARDNER, and Hezekiah HUNTER married Caroline BAUMGARDNER, daughter of Anthony and Elizabeth Davis BAUMGARDNER. Several researchers list the wife of Ohio PATTON as Mary Polly BAUMGARDNER, and if you will look at the 1850 Green Hocking County census you will find these PATTON/BUMGARDNER families all lined up in a row. Starting with the family of Abraham PATTON, then brother Ohio and Marry Polly BUMGARDNER?/PATTON, then listed next is the family of Anthony BUMGARDNER, followed by the family of John BUMGARDNER, and last but not least is the listing for the family of Robert PATTON who is the father of both Abraham and Ohio PATTON. I believe it is possible that Mary Polly BUMGARDNER/PATTON, Andrew, Anthony, and John BUMGARDNER are indeed siblings with John being the eldest brother.

Currently I am seeking information that will soundly connect these three families. Although these BAUMGARDNER/BUMGARDNER and PATTON families are not connected to me through blood relation, and only related to me through family marriage, it would be nice to be able to connect these three families without question. I really need someone that has researched the PATTON families, a family researcher that has a good deal of PATTON family knowledge, and a little BAUMGARDNER/BUMGARDNER family knowledge would not hurt a bit. Please let me list below a little of what I know about this family, and if you can connect any information listed below to your own family information please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Berna David Hunter
