Thank you Kathleen. You have provided more information than I had hoped for. Matthew Patten made the entry for January 22 and 23, 1778 "I Drawed a plan and writ a Deed from William Patten to his son john". William's son John was one of three possible John Pattens in the vicinity who could have been the one referred to in Matthew's diary on April 5, 1757 for settling an illegitimacy case. Since William's son John was born in 1751 he is ruled out.

I am very interested in the John Patten you mention who was sued by James Walker around 1749. I think he's the one I'm searching for. I'd like to share information with you directly outside this forum since I am writing a book about John Patten's illegitimate son.
