Apologies. I know you've been working on this for some time. Unfortunately, I can not document Nathaniel's birth or parents at this time. Perhaps all I can do is muddy the waters a bit.

I, too, have found his birth date as 2 Dec 1760 on message boards, but can not confirm this. The 1800 census record has him as:

Nathaniel Patten, 1800, Brookline, Hillsborough, NH, Page # 482, counts 32101-1001000

If this record is him, is correct, and is to be believed, the birth date of 2 Dec 1760 must be wrong. The census record shows Nathaniel as born before 1755 and Mehitable born between 1756 and 1774. It shows children (six male and one female) in the household, which agrees with my findings as follows:

1 Nathaniel Patten b: Bef. 1755 in Brookline, Hillsborough, NH in 1800
. +Mehitable Blood b: Bet. 1756 - 1774 in of Hollis m: May 20, 1784 in Hollis, Hillsborough, New Hampshire
...... 2 Nathaniel Patten b: July 10, 1785 in Brookline (Raby), NH Town
...... 2 Abel Patten b: January 13, 1787 in Raby, Hillsborough, NH
...... 2 John Patten b: October 06, 1788 in Raby, Hillsborough, NH
...... 2 Joel Patten b: August 09, 1790 in Raby, Hillsborough, NH
...... 2 Mehitabel Patten b: December 05, 1792 in Raby, Hillsborough, NH
...... 2 Mighill Patten b: March 14, 1795 in Raby, Hillsborough, NH
...... 2 Shattuck Patten b: January 18, 1797 in Raby, Hillsborough, NH

I agree with Nathaniel's marriage to Mehitable Blood. Several LDS IGI file extraction records show "Mehitible" as the mother of his children. The marriage date of May 20, 1784 seems reasonable even though (from my point of view) it is not proven, except as indicated below.

As to Nathaniel Patten's parents, I also have found the member submission records stating that a Nathaniel Patten born 19 Mar 1733 married a "Grace Walker". However, in my file (which I try to restrict to proven facts as much as possible), I have no Grace Walker listed. It would be nice to find reliable evidence of such a marriage, and perhaps evidence of the offspring of that marriage, but I have not been able to do so.

From a message board some time ago I picked up the following quote:

---------------------------------------------------
From the "History of the Town of Brookline, NH"

NATHANIEL PATTEN settled in the south part of the Mile Slip, now Brookline, as early, probably, as 1764, on land which he purchased of William and Martha Blanchard, Feb. 22, of that year; coming there from Townsend, Mass.

He is supposed to have been the son of Nathanial and Mary (Kidder) Patten, originally of Tewksbury, Mass; but who removed from Tewksbury to Townsend between the years 1733 and 1741.

His dwelling house was located in the southwest part of the town on the highway leading southerly from the old Mathew Wallace place to the Jasper Wyman sawmill; now the Perley Pierce sawmill, in South Brookline. He was a farmer and served as a soldier for Raby in the War of the Revolution. He was living here as late as 1795. He has no decendants of the name living here today. He m. May 20, 1784, Mehitabel Blood of Hollis.

Children; Born in Brookline
1. Nathanial, b. July 10, 1785
2. Abel, b. Jan. 13, 1787
3. John, b. Oct. 6, 1788
4. Mehitabel, b. Dec. 5, 1792
5. Mighill, b. Mar. 14, 1795
6. Shattuck, b. Jan. 18, 1797
------------------------------

The Nathaniel Patten described above appears to be the right one (the one who married Mehetible blood), and the six children (of seven known) are matching.

The "supposed to have been the son of Nathanial and Mary (Kidder) Patten" comment above is a little confusing. If true, the Nathaniel Patten who married Mehetible Blood was born on March 29, 1733 in Tewksbury, Middlesex, Mass. If so, and if this is him, this would put him at about 51 years old at marriage to Mehetible, and is certainly in agreement with the 1800 census record indicating birth "before 1755". However.............

On the other hand, the Nathaniel born March 29 1733 could have been the grandfather to the Nathaniel who married Mehitable Blood. Playing with the arithmetic a little, If the Nathaniel born 1733 married at twenty, his children would have been born 1754 or later. In the fairly common practice of naming the firstborn male son after the given name of the father, there could well have been (for me) a missing "Nathaniel Patten" born before 1755 who is the one who married Mehetible Blood. Can't say for sure.

I have about 29 "Nathaniel" Patten/Pattin records in file, all fairly well documented. Of those, the ones in the right date range are as follows:

Nathaniel Patten, Bet. 1723 - 1743, Billerica, Middlesex, Mass in 1763, spouse Esther Shed
Nathaniel Patten, March 29, 1733, Tewksbury, Middlesex, Mass, no spouse
Nathaniel Patten, Bet. 1747 - 1767, Hartford Twp, Hartford, Connecticut in 1787, spouse Lucinda
Nathaniel Patten, Bef. 1755, Brookline, Hillsborough, NH in 1800, spouse Mehitable Blood

To further complicate matters, here is what I have on the family of the Nathaniel born 1733:

1 Nathaniel Patten b: September 10, 1707 in Billerica, Middlesex, Mass d: November 25, 1756 in Stafford, CT
. +Mary Kidder b: March 26, 1707 in Billerica, Middlesex, Mass d: November 30, 1789
...... 2 Mary Patten b: April 10, 1728 in Tewksbury, Middlesex, Mass d: June 21, 1734 in Windham, CT
...... 2 Hannah Patten b: November 11, 1729 in Windham, CT
.......... +Nathan Pease m: January 24, 1762
...... 2 Jonathan Patten b: September 26, 1731 in Tewksbury, Middlesex, Mass d: November 28, 1740
...... 2 Nathaniel Patten b: March 29, 1733 in Tewksbury, Middlesex, Mass
...... 2 Mary Patten b: March 26, 1735 in Windham, CT
.......... +Jonathan Torrey
...... 2 William Patten b: March 11, 1737/38 in Tewksbury, Middlesex, Mass d: 1775
.......... +Ruth Wheelock m: 1758
...... 2 Sarah Patten b: 1744 in Windham, CT
.......... +Robert Heaton m: December 24, 1767
...... 2 Jonathan Patten b: Bef. August 12, 1744 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Mass
...... 2 John Patten b: 1747 in Windham, CT
...... 2 Ebenezer Patten b: Bef. July 22, 1750 in Cambridge, Middlesex, Mass

I know this has not answered your questions. I too am searching for the answers. If this stirs you to find new information on the parents or heritage of the Nathaniel who married Mehitable Blood, please let me know.

Bruce
