Hi, Marge –

I would love to have a copy of the photo of Charles V. Patten. My great grandfather was Charles Patten who died in Shelby County, Indiana but he was Charles Seth Patten, born 1857 in Green Lake County, WI. There are some intriguing possibilities of coincidence, however, and I would not be surprised that there is a connection between my Charles and yours.

1. Although Charles Seth was born in Wisconsin, his father William L. Patten (1827-1903) was from Morgan County, Ohio; he also died in Shelby County, IN. William’s father was John Patten (1796-1863) from Belmont County, Ohio. The Ohio Pattens had large families that spread out to Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa and one that I tracked as far as eastern Colorado

2. William and Charles V. are close enough in age to have been brothers or cousins. William named one of his sons Charles (Seth) and another one Vernon. Could the V. in Charles V. have stood for Vernon?

Are you related to the Pattens? I've traced my own line back to John Patten's father William (b. 1754 in County Monaghan, Ireland, d. 1840) but my research on the peripheral lines is a little sketchy. I would be happy to share information with you if you are interested.

Good hunting!

Dan Jessup
