Madison, Wisconsin - Robert L. Patten, age 72, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 10, 2007, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison with his family by his side. He was born on August 20, 1934, in Boscobel, Wisconsin, the son of Wayland and Isabelle (Van Horn) Patten. In 1952, Robert graduated from Boscobel High School. Robert was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Catherine Brown on August 24, 1952, in Boscobel. They then moved to Madison where they raised their five sons. Robert was an avid baseball fan and followed University of Wisconsin sports closely. Through the years, Robert was very involved with the East Madison Little League youth baseball program as a coach, umpire, president and treasurer. For 14 years, Robert worked for the Kroger Company in Madison, a large grocery and food distribution organization. He then was employed by the Consolidated Freightways trucking company, where he drove large trucks for 30 years until his retirement in 1996. After retirement, Robert and Catherine enjoyed many winters together in Clearwater, Florida. He was a member of the Teamsters Union Local No. 695, serving as Steward and on the Board of Trustees. Robert is survived by his wife of 55 years, Catherine (Brown) Patten of Madison; four sons, Michael (Mary) Patten of South Bend, Indiana; David (Stella) Patten of Marshfield, Wisconsin; Patrick (Julie) Patten of McFarland, Wisconsin; and Thomas (Jenny) Patten of Madison; 11 grandchildren, Dorian, Justin, Sarah, Alison, Andrew, Kathleen, James, Derek, Spencer, Faith and Timothy and a sister, Bette Wilson of Portage, Wisconsin. He is also survived by other loving family and friends. Robert was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Edward Patten whose remains are at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery; a sister, Mary Bartles; and two brothers, Jay and Carl Patten. A memorial service will be held at Ryan Funeral Home, 2418 North Sherman Avenue, Madison, on Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at noon with the Reverend Mark Bartels officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. Burial will be held at a later date at Roselawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Madison, Wisconsin. - Submitted by James Myron Herrick, a friend of the family and former neighbor.
