Kathern Patten of South Caolina

My husband is a Patten his ggrandfther was Samuel William Patten Br.1826 in GA D. 1888 Ga.
Had a lrg family.
Have not been able to trace because his ancestors lived down state & is covered in under lake. They didn't bother to move graves if they couldn't fine any close relatives. We have been told that a Amos Patten in Maine is a relative but, have not been able to make the connection. He according to my late sister-in-law had gotten that far. But have no idea how. Would you have anything in the book of Patten's. We are told that it could be Paton or Paten. Would appreciate any help. Jim's Grandfather's name was John Thomas.
Thank you,
