Dr. James Edward 'Jim' Patton, 82, Jonesborough, Washington Co TN, died Friday, April 24, 2009, after being taken from his home to the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Colley, VA, and was one of eleven children of the late Berkley Jefferson and May Puckett Patton. Dr. Patton was a member of Central Christian Church in Jonesborough and a member of Masonic Lodge #47 F&AM, Jonesborough. Dr. Patton graduated from Milligan College, earned a Master’s Degree at ETSU and a Doctorate at the University of Tennessee. He taught at Wallace High School, Washington County, VA, Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, TN, and, after earning his doctorate, he served as a Professor at Mississippi State in Starkville for twenty-three years and retired in 1993. Since his retirement he has resided in Jonesborough. Dr. Patton was an avid reader, rook player, sports fan, and had a special love of trains and railroads. He served in the US Army in Europe shortly after the end of WWII. His real love was his wife and family. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife and caregiver, Mary Jane Kincheloe Patton; daughter, Laura Croghan her husband, Jerry; grandchildren, Alex and Anna Croghan, of Limestone, TN; two sisters, Irene Elliott and Jewell Rose; and a brother, David Patton. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m., Monday, April 27, 2009, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Roberson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Monday prior to the service. Interment services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 28, 2009, at Mountain Home National Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Memorial donations may be made to East Tennessee Children’s Home, 517 Allen Ave., Elizabethton, TN 37643.
