Debbie: According to noted French-Canadien genealogist, Jacques of St. Foy, Quebec, Francois was the earliest member of the Payan clan who has been traced. Francois was born about 1650 in or near the city of Saintes, St. Columbr Parish, in the provive of Saintonge. He was a shoemaker and his wife's name was Magdelaine Cantin. Both died around 1700 in France. Their only known child was Jacques Payan de Saintonge who was born in France about 1674. He came to Quebec about 1695 and was assigned to the King's Army. He was also a master shoemaker. He was married to Louise Morin in 1698 Jacques died on 27 June, 1736 in Quebec.
