Dear Mary,
Thanks for your response.I think FX Payment had a daughter, Anastasia, for 2 reasons: the first is from the story of her family written by my aunt, Susan Doran Carry.
She was born in Empire in 1890 and she wrote the story shortly before her death in 1977. She wrote strictly from memory and she said the Payments had 12 children, but she only remembered the names of ten.The card file in the Empire Museum listed 11 names. In the 1870 census of Empire, I found a John Deering married to Anastasia .John Deering was the brother of my g-grandfather, Thomas Deering.John married Theresa Deering later.
I cannot find Anastasia in the death records of Leelanau County, but I can't find the death record of my grandfather's first wife either.
I believe that FX Payment had a sister, Anastasia, because names keep repeating in families and I don't imagine he was an only child.
By your records, Frank was one of the first 5 children and so he should have listed his mother as Josephine, but he didn't.However, that doesn't mean that she wasn't his mother.People had a tendency to move on and not talk about the ones that died.
I have some Land Records for the family. To homestead they had to apply and live on the land for 2 years and build a home. When they completed that they got a deed.
Frank Payment's deed was signed Nov. 1, 1869.
John Deering's, Oct. 1, 1870; Maxim's, Apr. 10, 1873; Jule (Joseph?) Apr 20, 1875; Xavier Payment, June 4, 1877.The library in Empire has a book abt the pioneers and there is a story on Frank Payment and his service in the Civil War.I think he was the only one who served in the military and he served from NY.
I have been collecting information for abt10 years and I'm trying to go thru my papers and document everything, but I keep getting interrupted.I hope to get it done this year and then I'll see where all the holes are.In the meantime, I'll keep an open mind.
I just printed out a list of the descendants of FX Payment and it came to 18 pages.Of course, 12 of the pages are the descendants of Mary Payment.I would love to have more information on the families of Michael and Philip and any other Payments you might have.
I will send what I have if you want it.
