From the booklet "Driving Tours of Maryland, 1975, is the following:

"Peabody Institute - A gift from the internationally famous philanthropist, George Peabody, who started his business career in Baltimore, the building was begun in 1857 and completed in 1878. It was the first great cultural institution in Baltimore and the program included all the liberal arts. The Library Room is now operated as a branch of teh Enoch Pratt Free Library and contains the Institute's old collection of fine books. (Open to the public.)"
