The best thing you can do, if you are really interested in tracing your family history, is to go to http://www.genuki.org.uk/ where you will find lots of help and advice on the methodology to use. It is fairly easy to get back to the start of civil registration in 1837 but does mean you'll have to buy some birth and marriage certificates: death certs are seldom worth the paper on which they are written.
