New Pearl book
"Pearl: the Man and the Place" by Don Hutchens and me, Lilla Ross, is just off the presses. It is the biography of Sir James Pearl, son of David Pearl and Eunice Allen, and the history of Mount Pearl, the town in Newfoundland that grew up on his estate. Don Hutchens spent 30 years researching Pearl in an effort to clear up the myths about him.
Pearl grew up in Nova Scotia, joined the Royal Navy at 9, served during the Napoleonic Wars, was the captain of a merchant ship in the China Seas where he sold opium, he saved 190 from a sinking ship, then returned to England, retired from the Navy and became a farmer in Newfoundland.
The book has a genealogy, photos and letters.
The price is $16.95 and it's available from Don at [email protected]
