Dear Ruth,
There is quite a bit about Ralph E. Peasley (nicknamed "Matt") in Lamphere's Passel O' Peasley's I think. Here's my notes about him and his ancestry:
He was born Ralph E. Peasley on 30-May-1866 in Jonesport, ME, and he died on 13-Dec-1948 in Aberdeen, WA.He apparently married once to a Ms. ? Dalton in 1903, but had no children. He was reportedly a sailor since age 14, and was a real sailor in the sense he distained steamers. His first command was a brig at age 22. He rounded Cape Horn in 1888 to the Pacific and never returned. He lived in Burlington, WA for a while, and then in San Francisco for a while.Basically he sailed the lumber trade between Washington state, California, Hawaii, Shanghai, Fiji, Australia, Mexico and South America. He was the skipper of the 3-masted schooner Wowona from 1899-1906 and the skipper of the 5-masted schooner Vigilant from 1920-1935.He was 6' 2" tall, and suffered a stroke in 1945 and died two years later.
He was the first child of 5 born to Henry C. Peasley and Elizabeth Rose. Henry is listed as both a farmer in Maine and as a master mariner (captain of the "Clement" 1879-1883). He also served in the civil war. Elizabeth taught school and was treasurer of the first public library in Jonesport.
Henry C. (b. 1839, d. 1908) was the first child of two sons born to Israel Peasley and Nancy H. Look. Israel was born in Weare, NH, but moved to Jonesport, ME, and although listed on the census records as a farmer as well, he was also a sailor. He bought the schooner Lafayette in May 1855.
Israel (b.~1816 d. 1889) was one of ten children (order unknown…but he was probably one of the later ones) born to James Peasley and Betsey Favor in Weare, NH. He is listed as a farmer.
James (b. 1773 d. ?) was the third of 4 children born to Jonathan Peaslee/Peasley and Sally Carr.Jonathan lived in Weare, NH but moved to Quebec for a while.
Jonathan (b. 1743 in Weare, NH) was the first of 10 children born to Moses Peaslee and Mary Gove.
Moses Peaslee (b.~1714 in Newton, NH? - d. 1784), married Mary Gove and had 10 children. Moses was the ninth of 11 children born to John Peaslee and Mary Martin.
John Peaslee (b. 1679 in Haverhill, MA, d.1752 in Newton, NH), married Mary Martin and had 11 children. His father was Joseph Peaslee (b. 1646 in Haverhill, MA, d. 1734 in Haverhill, MA) who married Ruth Barnard and had 8 children. His father was the original immigrant to America: Joseph Peaslee (b. ~1598 in England).
Hope this helps you place Ralph…he's one of the more famous relatives we have!
GRAHAM
