Peasleys /Davidsons in Cumberland Co. VA
My research indicates the following:
Hezekiah Davidson (died about 1791) and his wife Tabitha LNU (last name unknown) lived in Cumberland County, VA in the mid-late 1700s (per records at the courthouse). There are some earlier records on him in Albemarle County, VA.They had a son named Philimon Davidson (died in 1810), and a man with that name was in the Rev. War at Valley Forge (7th VA Regiment, Woodford's Brigade, Company of Captain Charles Fleming, Lafayette's Division).I believe that it was the same man, but I have not yet proven it.Philemon Davidson was married to a Mary LNU.Philemon and Mary had (per a will):
Kiturra Davidson (died 1816).
Reubin F. Davidson (married Lucy Peasley, daughter of Gabriel Pesley, Senior; Reubin died 1846).
Judith Davidson (married Gabriel Peasley; she was his second wife; Judith died?).
Nancy Davidson (married Thomas Taylor; Nancy died?).
Polly Davidson (married John Sandridge/Sandige; Polly died?).
Joseph Davidson (married Anna Smith; moved to Campbell County, VA; Joseph died after 1850).
Reubin F. Davidson left a will in Cumberland County, VA in 1846, but it does not name all of his children. It does list his two youngest children, Martha and Thomas, and it directed that they live with Gabriel Peasley. It named his son Joseph as an executor of the will, along with Gabriel Peasley.
From census and other records, I believe that Reubin F. Davidson and Lucy Peasley had the following children (some of this is still unproven at this point):
Andrew Jackson Davidson (married Selender F. Garrett).
William H. Davidson (married Malissa Ann Jane Childress in Goochland County, VA but returned to Cumberland County, VA to live).
Joseph Cornelius Davidson (married Vitula Monroe Sandridge/Sandige; Joseph moved to Buckingham County (by 1860) and then Chesterfield County, VA (by 1880) where he died in the 1890s; Joseph C. Davidson served in the War Between the States; he was my 2nd great-grandfather, and he is buried in Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA).
Poindexter Davidson (married Mary LNU; Poindexter moved to Buckingham County, VA; he and Joseph C. Davidson were next door neighbors in Cumberland County, VA, per the 1850 census).
Reubin P. Davidson (married Maria C. LNU and then married Mary Francis Agee in 1867, who had previously been married to a Mr. Garrett; Reubin P. Davidson moved to Chesterfield County, VA but then moved to Buckingham County, VA with his second wife; Reubin P. Davidson served in the War Between the States).
Martha Davidson (born about 1832).
Thomas Davidson (born about 1836; youngest child of Reubin F. Davidson and Lucy (Peasley) Davidson).
It seems likely that Hezekiah Davidson was descended from Davidsons in Charles City County, VA and/or "next door" James City County, VA (the Davidson families in those two counties in the 1600s were quite likely related, based on several identical given names, and based on a similar migration pattern, i.e., some of both families were in Cumberland County, VA for a while). In the 1600s, there were David Davidsons in both counties, and there was a Philemon Davidson in Charles City County, VA in the 1700s who could have been a brother or other relative to Hezekiah Davidson in Cumberland County, VA.Other early (1600s or 1700s) Davidson given names in these two counties included Christopher (said to be a son of a William who had been the Secretary of State for the Queen of England)), Alexander, Ezekial, Solomon, William and Stephen. In Buckingham County in the 1760s, there was an Edward, a David and a William Davidson. They had been in Goochland County, VA in 1746 (per the tithe list) and in Cumberland County, VA in the 1750s (per various land deeds and other court records). An Alexander Davidson was also in Buckingham County, VA in 1764 (was in Albemarle County, VA before that), and he and the above Edward Davidson moved to Campbell County, VA where both died in 1794.Some other members of this "Buckingham Davidson family" went to Botetourt County, VA and some of their descendants eventually went to Charlotte County, VA and elsewhere in the state.
