Thank you for your response. I have the marriage certificate of Henry John and Frances Yates. This indicates that her father was Richard, a carpet planner, but no indication of where they came from. It also indicates that George Peat, Henry John's father was dead by the time they married in 1870, so he won't be on the 1881 census. When I can next get to look up the BMD fiches, I hope to find the birth records for William, George and Samuel, so that I can find an address to look them up in the 1861 census. I have tried looking for Henry John and Frances Peat on the fiches of the 1881 census at both the Family Records Centre in London, and the local Family History centre, but can't find any trace of them. I think it is possible they may be registered under another name - Pidd, Peake, Peete, Peart are all possiblilities. I have a Mac and the 1881 census CD doesn't work on it, so if you could hunt the CD for me, that would be an enormous help.
What is your interest? Are you a Peat yourself?
