I recently received an e-mail from someone who asked if I had run across any full-blood Indians with the Peckham surname. The person who e-mailed me said the Indians she was researching were slaves owned by Peckhams in Rhode Island. They acquired the Peckham name because in the 1700s slaves often took the surname of their owners. She is not researching the same Indian Peckhams that you are, but it helps explain the circumstance that could connect Native Americans to a European surname.
