PECKHAMs and BAKERs at Newport First Baptist Church (1600s)

Audrey - Your ancestor John PECKHAM and my ancestor Rev. Thomas BAKER were both associated with Dr. John CLARKE at the Newport First Baptist Church. Just two days ago I was at the Newport Historical Society and took pictures of the initial page of the church records showing both their names. You are probably aware that there are many PECKHAMs listed in those records (Manuscript No. 1169). The records cover the time period 1644 to 1864. The records of the Newport Second Baptist Church (Manuscript 1656) also contain PECKHAMs beginning about 1700.

It has become increasingly difficult for my BAKER cousins and myself to find new information concerning our Thomas BAKER. Thomas "appears" in Newport about 1650 signing deeds, at the First Baptist Church, and as an original purchaser of Conanicut island. We do not know where he came from. Any unique sources that you have found useful in researching John PECKHAM, or mention of Thomas BAKER in PECKHAM documents, would be greatly appreciated.
