Thanks so much for all the searching you've done. I've mainly used the Peerage to track the Hamilton lineage--thought it was the safest!
Re your info on mysterious Margaret: b 1565 - 1595--yet her youngest child, Ester Peden was born in 1600.
JH, 3rd Earl of Arran,1537-1609, never married, was judged insane and 'left no issue'. Of course this could mean no legitimate issue!
There were two Janet Beatons, aunt 1486/7-1522 and her niece 1519-1567. The latter married 5 times, but not to a Hamilton--which is not to say she didn't 'dally' with a Hamilton! Had it been the 3rd Earl, she would have been about 18 years older than him. Not impossible but I've not seen it recorded or mentioned.
So, the mystery continues!
