No actual documentation for the dates of birth and death of John Peden are known to exist. The generally accepted date of birth for him is 1709 that was first published in "The Pedens of America" in 1900 by Eleanor M. Hewell. Her source for this date was a statement by a graddaughter of John Peden who was born in 1809 and stated that John Peden was born 100 years before her. Ms. Hewell also used the date of death as having occurred 1791-1792 but seemed to settle on 1791. Due to an absence of any other sources, the dates of 1709-1791 have been generally accepted by descendants.

There was a Peden bible brought from Ireland by the Pedens that probably contained the information. It apparently was owned by descendants of the House of James in Chester County, SC but by 1949 no one knew who then had posession of the Bible. Apparently Ms. Hewell never had access to the information contained in this Bible.

Difficult to say why the different dates on the monument erected in 1958 at the McDill, Strong, Moffatt Cemetery in Chester County. The committee that was responsible for the installation of the monument 52 years ago are no longer with us. My own feeling is that it was a mistake by a committee member who did not have access to the information in the 1900 book and was going by memory. If he or she had access to the book they could have also added the August 1715 date of birth of Margaret McDill that was listed in the book but was not placed on the monument.

The new Peden book is still in the editing process with professionals due to the large number of descendants contained therein. The new book mentions the following in Chapter Two, footnote #17: "The dates of birth and death for John Peden are 1709 and 1791. These dates have been used by virtually all genealogical writers since being published by Ms. Hewell in 1900. In 1958 a new monument was erected over the graves of John Peden and Margaret McDill (see photo Chapter Five) replacing a plain stone that had served to mark their final resting place. The 1958 monument indicates dates of 1702-1792 for John Peden. The author has been unable to reconcile the discrepancy between the generally accepted dates of 1709-1791 and the dates inscribed on the 1958 monument. The author has opted to use the generally accepted dates of 1709-1791 for John Peden since no documentation has been discovered to corroborate the dates used on the 1958 monument."
