daughter.
MARRIED -- in Green Point, Brooklyn, Kings county, N.Y., August 20th,
1859, Mr. Robert J. AVERY, of Mok. Hill, Cal., to Miss Mary J. RUSSELL,
only daughter of John M. RUSSELL, now of California.
DIED -- at Angels, Oct. 1st, Benjamin BUSH, formerly of Duchess county,
New York. [Duchess county, N.Y. papers please copy]
DIED -- at Angles, Oct. 1st, James THOMPSON, a native of Ireland.
------------------------------------------------
DIED -- at Murphys, Sept. 29th, of dysentery, Capt. James M.
MONTGOMERY, aged 49 years, a native of Portland, Maine.
[Captain MONTGOMERY came to Murphys in Feb., 1850, and was among our
oldest and most respected citizens. Pleasant yet retiring in his manner,
he was beloved by all who knew him. Being in port at the breaking out
of the war with Mexico, he volunteered and served as a soldier and
non-commissioned officer during that war.
He was an elder brother of Capt. Thomas MONTGOMERY of the Regular Army
(believed to be of the 8th Infantry) who died at his post in Oregon
about 2 years since. His father and mother, at a very advanced age, have
died within the past year.
He leaves a brother and sister in Maine, and a brother (a much
respected clergyman) in the interior of New York; also, a widow and son in New
York city, to whom it will be grateful to know that his last hours were
attended by kind friends, and his mortal remains followed to the grave
by Calaveras Royal Arch Chapter No. 12, and Ophir Lodge No. 33 of Free
and Accepted Masons, with the usual appropriate Masonic honors, he
being not only a worthy member, but Secretary of each of those bodies at
the time of his death. Peace to his ashes! Consolation to his friends! An
honest man is the noblest work of God! (signed) A.H.P.] [Maine and New
York papers please copy]

SAD ACCIDENT -- On Friday evening, Sept. 30th, at Mr. BLASTINGALE’s
Ranch, about 2 miles from Vallecito on the Columbia road, Mr. E.L. THAYER
had his right hand so mutilated by the accidental discharge of a
shotgun that amputation was necessary. The hand was amputated about 4 inches
above the wrist by Dr. CIBEIL of Vallecito, and Drs. CHANAUX and SMITH
of Columbia. The patient is now at Vallecito under the care of Dr.
CIBEIL, and is doing remarkably well. He had just traded off his gun and
was in the act of setting it off the piazza, to be out of the way of
children, when, by mere accident, the lock struck a stone in the front wall
of the piazza, which caused it to explode.
ANOTHER ACCIDENT -- An accident of a very serious nature happened to a
young man named Philip SICKELS, during the past week at Angels. While
driving a team he was thrown from the wagon, dislocating the spine and
causing complete paralysis of his lower extremities. He has been very
kindly attended by Mr. RICE and his family, in whose employ he was when
the accident occurred.
CHINESE SUGAR CANE -- Mr. Samuel BATCHELDER, left at our office on
Wednesday evening, 2 stalks of Chinese sugar cane, grown on Mr. MEDINA’s
(Bay State) Ranch, measuring respectively 15 and 16 feet in length. This
is one of the best ranches in Calaveras county. It has produced the
best grapes, peaches, plums and the most remarkable apple tree, we have
yet noted in the mountains.
AT A MEETING of San Andreas Division Sons of Temperance, held on
Wednesday evening, the following officers were elected:
John JONES, W.P.
M. O’CONNELL, W.A.
L. HINCKLEY, R.S.
Wells NICHOLLS, A.R.S.
E.C. BELLOWS, F.S.
Jos. KERNS, T.
A. FLAMM, C.
W. VAUGHN, A.C.
P. MASTERSON, I.S.
C.M. BROWN, O.S.
S.H. MARLETTE, Chaplain
SOME BLAST -- On Wednesday afternoon last, a blast was discharged in
the deep cut of the Murphy’s flume, throwing the rock through town in
every direction. One, weighing 35 pounds, fell through the roof of Mr.
KING’s saloon, crushing the counter, breaking glasses, chandeliers, and
doing other damage. Fortunately no person was hurt, although several
gentlemen were engaged in conversation at the bar at the time. Another
rock, weighing about 7 pounds, went in at the front door of Mr. CRISPIN’s
saloon, through the house and out at the back door, without doing any
damage. 8 men were in the saloon at the time. Another heavy rock went
through the roof and out at the gable end of another building, without
doing further damage. It was a miracle that no person was injured. The jar
occasioned by the shock of the blast, and the sound of a shower of
rocks on the roofs of the houses, made matters and things a little
earthquakish.
INFORMATION WANTED -- Of Simpson LEARNED, who came to California in
1849. In 1855 he resided in the town of Mariposa, since which time his
relatives have not heard from him. Any information concerning him will be
thankfully received by his father, John LEARNED, at Webster, Mass., or
by Archibald CAMPBELL, Mokelumne Hill, California.
A GRIZZLY TRAPPED -- The hands in the employ of Mr. William DENNIS,
herding cattle up in the meadows of the snowy region near the head of the
Stanislaus river, a few weeks since set a trap for a grizzly which had
been prowling round their camp, and had the satisfaction next morning
of finding his grizzlyship snug in limbo. He was shot and the meat
apportioned out to the many hungry immigrants who were daily passing along
that way. His weight was about 1000 pound neat.
THE HESPERIAN -- The October number of this magazine has been received.
The leader is a sketch of the life of Ziba BRANCH, an old pioneer of
this State, written, as are all the leaders, by Mrs. F.H. DAY, the
editress. The other articles are well got up, and the number is equal to any
of its predecessors. The engraving -- by NAHL -- of a variety of the
lily, is natural and admirable. We commend the ‘Hesperian’ to the
patronage of the public.
INFORMATION WANTED -- By James H. TITUS, Brush Creek, Butte county, of
his son, George Henry TITUS, aged 11 years, who left home, as is
supposed, with a miner named Joshua McELROY, August 18th. The boy is 4 feet
10 inches in hight, has blue eyes and light hair, and would be supposed
to be 14 years of age. McELROY is of medium size, of dark complexions,
has a long, square face, and is about 28 years old.
VALLECITO HILL CLAIM -- Messrs. SUBACH & Co.’s claim, known as
“Vallecito Hill Claim,” has turned out to be one of the rich ones. This company
consists of 4 Germans who have worked nearly a year in opening up the
claim, and now, when it is in good working order, one of the partners,
last Sunday, sold his interets (¼) for the nice little sum of $3000. The
money was paid over in Cohen & Levy’s store.
THE LAST of the BRAVE MEN OF ‘76 -- The following list gives the names
of the last lingering links between the days of Washington and the
present. Revolutionary soldiers under pension:
William CUNNINGHAM, aged 95 years
Peter RIFE, aged 97
Mathew SEAY, aged 96
George ESTES, aged 96
Daniel HICKS, aged 97
Wm. ONEY, aged 98
William STEWART, aged 98
Henry WILLOUGHBY, aged 100
