Looking for information on Thomas and Mary Peel in Lewis County, NY. I have them on several census from Pinckney, Lewis Co, NY - 1860, 1865, 1875,1892. From the census information they were born in approximately 1825 to 1830 in Ireland. They had the following children on the census reports: Anna about 1857, Catherine about 1859, Mary about 1861, Nicholas about 1863, and Thomas about 1966. I originally was not looking for the Peel family so I do not have all the census info on them....this was just information I found on the pages I copied for another purpose.
On the 1860 census, Thomas and Mary had two children, Ann and Catherine. Also living in their household were an elder Mary McDermott about 1970-1800 and her son Michael McDermott. The elder Mary McDermott also had a son Thomas, daughter Ann (married name Brennan)...and I believe Mary and Elizabeth. The Peel family, Thomas McDermott family, and Ann Brennan family were all neighbors in Lewis County, NY (I have an 1874 map that has their homes labeled with their names, and have actually found the cellar ruins of the Brennans and McDermotts).
By the next census (1870) the elder Mary McDermott was living with her son Thomas. This leads me to believe that Mary Peel may have been the daughter Mary McDermott who I have not yet been able to trace as they lived so close and it would make sense that her mother stayed with her, especially since the mother had two other children right next door who she could have lived with rather than living with strangers.
The elder Mary McDermott and her children came from Ireland, through Canada, and then on to Lewis County, NY in the early 1850's.
If you have any information on these folks, please contact me. I live very close to where these Peels, McDermotts and Brennans lived - if this is a connection I will be more than happy to help hunt down the Peels as I work on the others. I would also appreciate any information that might disprove this theory so I don't continue down the wrong path too long.
