The original spelling, of course, was Peebles, but all references I have found in Alabama refer to Peeples or Peoples. I don't have access to the "Peeples, Ante 1600-1962" book, except by indirect reference.
Most researchers say the name changed to Peeples at the time the family moved into South Carolina and Georgia. There is a Peeples Cemetery in South Carolina (northwest of Beaufort) and the name Peeples appears on an 1825 map of that area in the same vacinity.
Some could have retained the older spelling, even as some of my kin spell "Murphy" as "Murphey" which was the original spelling.
