Signau, Bern, Switzerland mentions of Pfaffli in official records

My brother recently gave me three file boxes of research my grandfather, Artie Irvin Peffley, had done on the Peffley families following the publication of the Frost book. He - and the Frosts - had hoped that he would be able to carry on their work, but he died suddenly in 1961. I am just beginning to find out what he had collected.

After the Frost book's publication, a distant cousin of May Frost's (Rev. Carl T. Smith of Philadelphia, PA) found Peffley records in Bern, Switzerland and copied them out. According to a letter to my grandfather written by May M. Frost June 25th, 1959, "Last year [Carl] copied the data that you saw. I inferred from it that the name Nicholas Peffley was carried through several lines and that one of these lines went to the Palatine section of Germany. It might have been Nicholas' father Nicholas that migrated to Germany. Only research could make it certain. Here is one point that I never followed up; Nicholas Peffley had a small hertiage from Germany that was paid to his son Jacob about 1765. Carl Smith found this data and probably remembers is and could give it to you. It might furnish a lead to the father of Nicholas, and just where he lived in Germany."

My grandfather did visit Signau and apparently verified that our Nicholas originated there, but I have yet to locate this documentation. It may be that it is with other records that have disappeared in the four decades since my grandfather's death. I do have a copy of Carl Smith's notes, however:

[handwritten note by Artie Irvin Peffley: Copied by Carl Smith, a distant cousin of May Frost’s, while on a trip abroad this fall (1958) to the Brussels Fair, and to Switzerland. Notice the Nicholas Peffley for several generations.]
