Just found some really old English Pegg references that I thought I'd share with anyone out there interested in the really old stuff. Quotes are from "The Surnames of Leicestershire and Rutland" by David Postles.
pg. 37
"Richard Pegman was pleased in mercy in the previous year for non-suit of action of debt against John Sclatere. The Pegge kinship was a local dynastic family, later of gentle statu. In the rental of c1370 Hugh Pegge held a messuage and 5a 3r. William pegge two cottages, robert Pegge a messuage and 13.5a. Roger Pegge a bovate and the heirs of Roger, who must have died recently, a messuage and a croft. In the lay subsidy of 1327, Robert Pegge had been taxed at 6s. A successor Thomas Pegge was parker to the manorial account of 1376 and appeared in court in many personnal actions between 1376 and 1412 and in 1430-31.

Merely 10 names persisted from c1370 through to 1559 almost all common (Andrew, Bell, Browne, Greene, Marshall,Smythe, Ward and Wright)and gentry (Pegge)
