Thank you for writing that. I too thought that was harsh. Corrupted, anglecized.........would be a better way to word it. I also seriously doubt that enumerators were mostly illiterate. If they were illiterate they wouldn't have been able to read the form they recorded data on. That just defies logic and spreads silly rumors. I'd like to know where you read that. Don't forget too, that some people wanted their name recorded just as it was recorded for various reasons - And remember that many settlers were illiterate themselves.
