History Question

My family came from Missouri (Floussant)through Montana to Washington State. My great, great, grandmother (Marie Reine Smith Pelkey)was reputed to be the first white woman in Montana and once had a statue on the University of Montana (Missoula) campus. (a little Pelkey history) The name was Pelletier originally and changed to Pelkey some time in the early 1800s. Augueste Pelletier's son (born 1840)was named Augustus G. Pelkey. My question: Did a bunch of Pelletiers decide to change their name to Pelkey or a single Pelletier family?
