Is Plutier on census likely to be Pelletier?

I'm trying to find someone who appeared in the 1870 IN census under the name August Plutier, born in IL about 1824. Wife name Mary. Her birthplace was Saxony. I've not been able to find anything about the name Plutier. I did find a death record for August Ploeter. Ploeter seems more German to me, and Pelletier more French. Anyone have an opinion or experience with the name Plutier?
