Susan,

My grandfather registered the birth of one of his daughters in Maine with his wife's maiden name of Poliquin (her name was Marie Peloquin) This was in 1895. I have a copy of that birth certificate. I would say that it is indeed possible that these two names may be interchangeable, perhaps not officially, but done anyway. Good luck! rachel
