This is not through crass ignorance,it seems to be a mistake in the federal census unless they used both spellings

Philippe POLIQUIN was first married to Marie VILLENEUVE c. 1876 at Hull. He remarried 06 jan. 1906 at Ste.Anne, Ottawa (reg. # 005831, Ontario Marriage Registration) to Josephine St-Jean. Philippe is 45 years of age and said to be born in Trois-Rivières, Quebec. His parents are listed as Joseph POLIQUIN and Sophie LAPOINTE.
Although there is no marriage between a Joseph POLIQUIN and a Sophie LAPOINTE in Trois-Rivières, there is one between Joseph POLIQUIN and Julie TOUSIGNANT dit LAPOINTE, 18 June 1844 at St-Stanislas (Champlain co.), near Trois-Rivières. They had 6 children baptisted at St-Stanislas and two at Trois-Rivieres.
Philippe POLIQUIN was baptised 21 July 1857 at Trois-Rivières (Immaculée-Conception parish).
Joseph POLIQUIN (Joseph & Genevieve Vallerand) married Julie TOUSIGNANT dit LAPOINTE (Jean-Baptiste & Francoise Minot) 18 Jun. 1844 at St-Stanislas (Champlain co.).
