I recently copied pages from the Orphan House Records located at the Charleston Archives. I found middle names and initials and birthdates for the children of Matilda Harrison and J.H. PENDARVIS:
George Robert M. PENDARVIS
b. 1 Feb 1890, Adams Run, SC
James Allen PENDARVIS
b. 10 Dec 1891, Adams Run, SC
Joseph R. PENDARVIS
b. 5 Feb 1894, Adams Run, SC
(no record of Lillie PENDARVIS)
There was a letter written by the Postmaster of Adams Run on behalf of the PENDARVIS family to the Orphan House Commissioners, stating that Mr. PENDARVIS was in ill health and the children were in desprate need of assistance. The father died soon afterwards. I took special notice that the word "white" was underlined referring to the children. Which tells me that their race may have been questioned. I know that Matilda was of Native American blood. However, I do not know if they were of Negro blood as well.
Application for Binding Out granted
to J.H. SHOKES for George PENDARVIS
as an Apprentice Carpenter.
14 Apr 1904.
There was a file on George PENDARVIS b. 20 Oct. 1919 Chas. SC, the son of Joseph R. & Ruby Heywood PENDARVIS; and their daughter May PENDARVIS b. 6 Jun 1917 Chas. SC. The family lived at 442 Spring St, Chas. SC. They were Episcopalian. Later they are living at 65 Congress St, Joseph R. is a painter and the family is planning to move from the city. This looks like if could be my Joseph. What do you think?
Does this help you sort out this line in anyway?
