Hi searchers,
My great aunt was named Wilma PENDARVES ROWSE. Both her grandfathers emigrated in the 1840's and 1850's to Ontario Canada from Cornwall. I still haven't found the family connection, but know I will someday. In my years of searching these Cornish kin, I've filed these references to the PENDARVES name. I thought I'd share them you -- there might be a name or reference someone's looking for.

The Manor of Ludgvan Lese covered parts of the parishes of Ludgvan, St. Ives,
Zennor and Towednack. The abstracts below are taken from LDS film #1471491.

"...most English families had acquired a surname by the end of the 14th
century. But in Cornwall the situation was rather different. East Cornwall seems to have been more like England, but in west Cornwall there is ample evidence to show that many surnames were still in a state of flux in the 16th century.
In 1602 Richard Carew wrote this in his Survey of Cornwall:
' Touching their particular denominations, where the Saxons have not
intruded their newer usances, they partake in some sort with their kinsmen
the Welsh; for as the Welshmen catologize ap Rice, ap Griffin, ap Owen, ap
Tudor, ap Lewellin etc. until they end in the highest of the stock, whom
their memory can reach unto: so the western Cornish by a like, but more
compendious manner, entitle one another with his own and his father's
Christian name, and conclude with the place of his dwelling; as John the son
of Thomas, dwelling at Pendarvis is called John Thomas Pendarvis. Richard,
his younger brother is entitled Richard Thomas Pendarvis."
