In answer to recent posts about William Pendarvis and his relationship to James Pendarvis, the following is what I've discovered. The men listed below are all close relatives in my opinion. I have not found their parentage in my research, my guess is that they all came from Colleton Co. SC where the the courthouse was burned during the War Between the States.

JAMES PENDARVIS Sr of Alachua -b. ca. 1797 at SC. He m. Keziah Tucker (b. 1806 GA) dau. of Thomas (b. ca.1770 Edgecombe, NC) and Elizabeth Tucker on 18 Nov. 1824 at Camden Co. GA. James P- of Glynn Co. receives two lots in Troup Co. (indicating he is married) in GA land lottery of 1827. He is listed in 1830 Camden Co. U.S. Census. Joseph P- of Wayne Co. is the only other of this surname listed in the state. James is witness to a deed dated 20 Jun. 1834, Thomas Tucker, grantor to Elizabeth Goodbread (grandaughter), grantee of two slaves (Book M, p.225). Thomas Tucker dies at Alachua Co. FL in 1835. James is preset at Seminole attack on Newnansville (now Gainesville FL) in 1835 (McKay, _Florida Pioneers, vol. 1, p.328), James served as a Pvt. in 6th Reg. of FL Militia in War of 1836. Several entries from Alachua probate files indicate that he was a merchant and owned a store. In 1839 he signs a petition along with Elijah and J. A. Tucker to establish a federal land office at Newnansville ("FL Genealogist", vol.21#4, p. 134). He appears in 1840 Census at Alachua Co. FL and is 40-50 in age. In 1843 he is appointed to oversee construction of a new jail (Alachua Co. Comm. Book 1 pp.19-20). On 31 Jul.1845 he (by cash sale) is granted 160 acres (T8-S, R-18E). The 1850 Census says he is 53 and b. at SC, no wife is named. He is overseer of the new Bellamy Road construction in 1852 (Co. Comm. B.1, p. 52-3). He appears in the 1860 Census as age 49 and b. at SC with wife Zibby, age 53, b. in SC. His son James P- (1835-1867) appears in 1860 Census, age 28, b. at SC, and m. to Nancy age 30, b. at FL. James Sr does not appear in the 1870 Census and is dead before 1867. There is no will or administration for his estate (the extended probate on file in Alachua Co. is for his son James jr).
