The Jno. Pendarvis called Enoch in Gavins Diary was the father of John Pendarvis the stepfather of John E.D. Traxler, James Jacob Traxler, and William Barnette Traxler who were the sons of M. John Traxler. Enoch's son John Pendarvis (mother unknown) married Susannah Ann Brown Traxler. If the 12 year old was that ill-behaved and insulting, it would not be surprising to hear that a step-grandfather c.55 years old might administer a corporal punishment, which was common practice in South Carolina "in the day". The use of "badly" to describe this beating is somewhat disturbing. I have heard "Old Enoch" described as a strong but gentle man who took good care of his children and grand-children. He was my 3rd great grandfather.
