Hi Ned,

Your father and my grandfather were first cousins, so we are fairly closely related. The Pendarvis family is relatively large, and the book that I am writing about them is intended to trace the entire existing family back to Joseph and Parthenia. This does not mean that anyone with colonial Pendarvis blood is descended from Parthenia, but that all existing Pendarvises are descended from her. The descendants of Joseph, Sr.'s daughters, and those descended from Josiah, Sr. and Jr. are all unrelated to Parthenia (of these, of course, none have had the Pendarvis name in nearly 200 years). I am willing to help with any line, and welcome contradictions to my theories. I feel confident that all of the proposed lineages of living Pendarvises that do not include Parthenia, and that I have seen, are false. I am happy to dispell them one by one if you'd like me to.

I don't mean to sound combative, and I certainly don't feel that way, but the nature of your questions and statements force me to be on the defensive. In my opinion this is very healthy, and I wish all genealogists were put to the same tests and standards.

Actual records indicate that there was only one immigrant Pendarvis to ever arrive in the state of SC or any other southern state, with the possible exception of two. These two were listed on a Virginia land grant from the 1670's. There is no indication that they ever actually came to America and certainly no indication that they had families here. British records indicate that both of these individuals died childless in Britian, and that their inclusion in the land grant list was a mistake or fraud. (a common practice)

Our Joseph (grandfather of Parthenia's Joseph) immigrated to SC in 1671, and is the only recorded entry of a Pendarvis that I've ever seen. The only son he mentioned in his will or that can be found in any document was named John. This John married at least twice and had four recorded sons. Of these, Joseph left only the illegitemate children that he had with Parthenia (documented by an opinion in equity), John and Benjamin died unmarried and childless (documented by a petition in equity), and Josiah who had Richard by his first wife, Josiah, Jr. by his second, and no sons by his third wife (documented in the revolutionary war claims of Josiah Sr.'s executor). This would mean that in the fourth generation there were only two Pendarvis males descended by someone other than Parthenia: Richard and Josiah, Jr.. Richard died childless as documented in several petitions to the State Assembly. Josiah Pendarvis, Jr. changed his name and that of his progeny to Bedon in 1802. Per bible records it is clear that his oldest living son at the time of the name change was 16 and that that son and the younger both assumed the name Bedon.

While the above does not prove conclusively that no other Pendarvis male existed, it does diagram the known Pendarvises in America. If others existed, they are unrecorded. There is nothing to indicate that all living Pendarvises are "not" descended from Parthenia other than a few late 19th and many 20th century denials based on race. Race is not a reasonable proof, as very few of us have images of our colonial ancestors.

Your paternal Pendarvis lineage is as follows: Edward Olin Pendarvis, Jr.>> Edward Olin Pendarvis>> Timothy Olin Pendarvis>> Daniel Adam Pendarvis>> Daniel Pendarvis>> Joseph Pendarvis>> Thomas Pendarvis>> Joseph Pendarvis and Parthenia>> and so on. If you have doubts about this line, please let me know. You are also descended from the Pendarvis family in at least three other lines, including one from a daughter of Parthenia and Joseph. I hope this helps, and I'd like very much to meet with you.

Best Regards,

Randy Floyd
