Here is a link and info I have not seen before.

Origin Displayed: Irish

The Pendergraft family appears to have originally lived in the village of Prendergast in the Welsh county of Pembroke. The surname Pendergraft belongs to the large category of Anglo-Norman habitation names, which are derived from pre-existing names for towns, villages, parishes, or farmsteads. The Gaelic form of the surname Pendergraft is de Priondragás.

Spelling variations include: Prendergast, Prendegast, Pendergast, Pendegast, Prendregast, Pendergrass, Pendergrist and many more.

First found in Pembroke where they were seated from early times and were Lords of the manor of Prendergast and estates in that shire.

Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Phillip Prendergast who settled in Virginia in 1643; Richard and Miles Prendergast arrived in Philadelphia Pa. in 1858; Edward Prendergrast settled in Philadelphia in 1838.
