I seem to have found my Mary Penman but am still unclear. She was born in Glasgow around 1770 and in 1796 married William Jaffray and amongst their children was a James Jaffray.

My gt gt grandmother Fanny Kerr, nee Reid, Coatbridge, named my gt grandmother Mary Penman Kerr and her brother James Jaffray Kerr. They do not seem to be relatives at all. Any clues to a connection? Why would she call her first son and daughter after another family?
