Thank you for your response. The family records are quite clear that Jane Penman, b. 1792, came from Biggar. She and Robert Thom(p)son were married in Scotland (somewhere)as the first of her children were born in Scotland. but they were in America by 1819/20. Robert Thompson was from Lanark, Lanark where his birth is recorded.
They may have been noncomformist which is why we do not find parish records for their marriage or the births of their children in Lanark.
I do not know what to say. Biggar is so small it seems unlikely there could be two unrelated Penman families.
Jane's first daughter was named Grace (b. 1811)which is why we wonder if her mother might have been named Grace if they were following naming traditions. Her second daughter was named Agnes after her husband's mother Agnes Ritchie. Jane's first son was named William after her husband's father William. THe second son was named Robert so we wonder if her father was named Robert or whether they were naming the second son after his own father and deviating from the norm.
Do you have a male Penman in Biggar that is old enough to be a father to Jane (ie. born by 1772).
