Mauri,
That is an interesting story and no doubt nottoo uncommon for those times. Adoption does seem to have been common in the Penney/Penny line; though I have yet to find any adoptions of children not "blood kin", lending credenceto your story of Penney parentage.
James Penney was born in North Carolina, but arrived in Tennessee by 1830.I haven't yet been able to locate a NC county of origin.James Penney's wife's name was Pheraby Hailey, daughter of Duncan Ross Hailey and Mary Penny.Mary Penny was born in 1796 in Wake County, NC.I haven't researched much on this line yet, but I think that Durham, NC may be Wake County.
I can't speak for the Penny line in Wake County (since I have not done the due diligence yet), but I can give you some gleanings on my branch in Gibson County, Tennessee. If they are cut from the same cloth, then I would expect to find a similar disposition. The Penny family of Gibson County's slaves, after they were freed, remained loyal friends to the Penny family. The 1870 census shows an elderly freed couple with the last name of Penny on the same page as my ancestors.I know this doesn't seem like all that much to go by, but the Penny family lost their land after the war's end-thus demonstrating that the elderly freed Pennys had more than a "sharecropper" relationship to the white Pennys of Gibson County.
I'll keep an eye out as I try to trace the lines back and forward again for the name alonza in my research and let you know if I am able to find him.
