Penn(e)ys of Harwich, Mass., and Upstate New York

The first installment of a two-part article, "The Penn(e)ys of Harwich, Massachusetts, and Upstate New York," is scheduled to appear in the April 2002 issue of THE NEW YORK GENEALOGICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. The product of much primary research, it is by far the most complete, detailed, and well-documented article on this family ever published.

The article begins with William1 and Hannah (Gray) Penny of Harwich, Barnstable Co., Mass., and present-day Southeast, Dutchess Co., N.Y. It covers their children, William2 (carried forward) and John and their families; the families (if any) of William2's children, Temperance3, George, William, Edward, Amiel (carried forward), Deborah, and Capt. John; the families (if any) of Amiel3's children, Samuel4, Abigail, Bethiah/Bethiel, Solomon, Esther, George W., and John (carried forward); and the families (if any) of John4's children, Lodema5, George W., Rhoda, Celestine, Grove, and Emily. An appendix is devoted to George W. Penney (1806-1881) and his family. This George W. is often confused with John4's son of that name but was actually his second cousin.

Among the New York towns in which second- and third-generation Penn(e)ys lived are Southeast and Patterson, Dutchess Co.; Unadilla Forks (Plainfield Township), Otsego Co.; Lorraine and Henderson, Jefferson Co.; and Pittstown, Rensselaer Co.
