Charles Edwin Shelby [CES] Collection on microfilm, KY Hist Soc, Frankfort, KY-Charles died in the summer of 1985 in Savannah GA-

Microfilm #214, file folder 441: CES received a letter from Fred E Penney, Jr of Sacramento,, CA, My extract of his letters-[ ] my comments

26 Jun 1971- "....Thomas B Penneys mother was Susan Bledsoe, the dau of Col Anthony Bledsoe of Sumner Co TN. Her sister Sarah married David Shelby..." [this is documented]

13 Jul 1971-
"I believe my Thomas Bledsoe Penney who married Miss Shelby was deceased by 1850. I have checked all counties (1850 census) near New Madrid Co, MO, plus the entire State of Louisiana as they were supposed to have lived there for awhile. I have never found them."

The 1850 census of New Madrid Co, on Mary Shelby & the Penney children are I believe the children of Thomas B & Miss Shelby.

William Archilbald Penney married Susan Bledsoe in 1790. They left TN & settled in Cape Girardeau Co MO around 1808. They had 4 sons & 3 dau's [he doesn't name the daus]
The sons were Anthony Bledsoe, Isaac Bledsoe, Thomas Bledsoe, & William Archibald, Jr.

My great grandfather was the Thomas Bledsoe. The year of birth being 1838 is correct plus he had a younger brother Fred, which could be Alfred in the census.

...The Thomas B who married Miss Shelby was born just before or just after the Penney family arrived in Cape Girardeau Co in 1808.

...Family history from early Penney papers has "Thomas B Penney married Miss Shelby, dau of David Shelby of New Madrid Co"..As you can see I have never been able to determine when Thomas & Miss Shelby died. I do not know where they were in 1830 or 1840 but do know they were in Louisiana for a short time. As far as I know their oldest son was John...Fred & his wife Nancy LAW died within a week of each other in New Madrid Co in 1876....

CES responded with data on David Shelby & his son Eli- some of his data is incorrect. States "...Historic Sumner Co TN-Genealogies of the Bledsoe, Cage, & Douglas' -Considerable space is given to the Bledsoe Family- p 108 says: Susan Bledsoe, dau of Col Anthony & Mary (Ramsey) Bledsoe, married William Penny. No information."

History of SE MO by Goodspeed (1886)- ..Wm Penney moved to Cape Giradeux (sic) Co MO abt 1808- Thomas B Penney m a daughter of Shelby & moved to New Madrid Co MO-[CES does not quote the data..]
++++++++
Mary is age 50 b MO, on the 1850 census for New Madrid Co, MO-Her younger children:
James Shelby 16
Jno Shelby, 21
Austin Shelby, 24
Also in the HH with her are a Thomas PENNY age 12 b MO; Alfred PENNY age 10 b MO; and Amanda PENNY age 14 b MO.- These are probably her grandchildren by a desc'd daughter.
It is assumed she is the widow of Eli SHELBY. Eli was the son of David Shelby and 2nd wife, Catherine Belle.

New Madrid Co MO- Box 18 p 424, May term of Court, 1850- Virginia R SHELBY, guardian of M(Martin) E. SHELBY, a minor, infant child of E.M. SHELBY. Report of sale, dated 16 May 1850, estate of E.M. SHELBY, deceased.
The petition of Virginia R SHELBY represents that Eli M SHELBY died in the yr 1849 in New Madrid Co, seized & possessed of the following....80a, that the sd Eli M left to his only heirs, the petitioner, who is his widow, & a son Martin E SHELBY, who is an infant..
