SPRINGFIELD - Ralph C. Fuhrken, 82, of Springfield, died Wednesday Dec. 20, 2006, at Memorial Medical Center.
He was born Oct. 31, 1924, in Washington, Kan., the son of Arnold and Gertrude Penney Fuhrken. He married Willa M. Greenan in 1947 in Clarinda, Iowa.
Mr. Fuhrken was a graduate of Kansas State University and an alumnus of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served three years in the South Pacific with the 25th Infantry Division and was a member of the division band. He was a high school instrumental band director for 10 years in the Kansas school system and served on the Band Directors Association for the state of Kansas. He was co-owner of Prarie Wholesale Supply Co. for 30 years. He served many years on the board of Regional Building Wholesalers.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was a member and past president of the IBT Sunday school class. He served on the executive board of Washington Street Mission and Springfield Community Concerts Association. He was counselor and 2005 recipient of the Distinguished Service Award for SCORE. He was a member of Frontier Lodge AF&AM of Washington, Kan., Springfield Scottish Rite Consistory, Ansar Shrine, AAONMS and Shrine Retirees Club. He was a former member of the Shrine band, Panther Creek Country Club and American Legion Post 32.
Survivors: wife, Willa; son, Ronald (wife, Janet) Fuhrken of Kansas City, Mo.; two daughters, Sandra (husband, Wayne) Caster of Ponte Verde Beach, Fla., and Trudy Stutzman of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services: 10 a.m. today, First United Methodist Church West, Dr. Roger K. Rominger officiating. Private interment will be in Camp Butler National Cemetery.
