Looking for a "should be famous" PENNOCK
In Wyoming State Historical Society's "Annals of Wyoming" July 1951, Vol 23 #2 there is a copy of the Diary of Jake Pennock. It is a 5 month daily journal of his activities as Sargeant of Co. "L" 11th Kansas Cavalry. They and others were in Wyoming protecting the wagon trains of emegrants and the telegraph lines which were a main target of the indians. He mentions getting letters from New Orleans and newpapers from Fort Levenworth, KS. which is where he mustered out on 21 Sep 1865. His closing words:
"Sept. 25, 1865: Paymaster has payed off Co. "L" and scattered it to the four winds of the Earth. This concludes the History of Company "L" 11th Kansas Cavalry. It's organization is no longer known. It's members are flying hither and thither to mothers, sisters, wives and the loving arms of friends at home."
The original copy is filed by Historical Society, Topeka, KS from May 1, 1865 to Sept. 25, 1865.
Probably Jake's true name is Jacob. But so far I have been unable to find a Jake or Jacob in the right time frame. I would love to see this brave Pennock placed with his family in history.
