Have solved the Catherine (Catorn)Butler, Leete, Roberts puzzle.
Catorn Butler was the daughter of Evan Butler. Evan was the son of John Butler and had three children, Catorn (Catherine), Evan and Walter. Catorn is mentioned in William Pennoyer's will as being the sister of an Evan Butler. Walter is listed as being the son of an Evan Butler. Catherine was born 1640/42 and Walter was born 1644, which makes them of the same generation. Thus we have Catherine, Evan and Walter as brothers and sister and Evan Sr. as their father. Evan was married to Johane Penoyer, daughter of William Pennoyer, Esq who died in 1670 and his will listed the above three children. Thus Catorn, Evan and Walter were William Pennoyer Esq's grandchildren. Now, as I already said, Evan was the son of John Butler b. 1583/84 Hereford, Herfordshire, England and died abt 1605, Cusop, Herefordshire, England and was the son of Thomas Butler b. 1555 and Margaret Whitney b. abt. 1554/59. Thomas Butler was the father of another Katherine Butler, b. 1579, Robert Butler, b. 1575/80, Richard Butler, b. 1582 and of course John.
Bring in the Pennoyer name.
Robert Butler Sr. witnessed a brutal murder and to distance himself from it took his grandmother's maiden name of Pennoyer, thus becoming Robert (Butler) Pennoyer. Robert was married twice. First to Elizabeth Chambers, b. abt 1580 and were the parents of Samuel Penoyer, b. 1602 and the above mentioned William Pennoyer, b. 1604 d. 1670 and left the famous Pennoyer will.
Robert Butler Sr. married a second time to Alice Rogers and they were the parents of Robert Pennoyer, Jr., b; 1614, Elinor Pennoyer b. 1619 and Thomas Pennoyer b. abt. 1624. Robert Jr. and his brother Thomas went to America on the ship Hopewell in 1635. It's unsure as to the exact date of death of Thomas, but Robert Jr. after multi legal problems, one of which was possible rape, became a good solid citizen and settled down and had children.
Here it is simplified:
Thomas Butler m. Margaret Whitney
Their children:
Katherine Butler b. 1579
Robert Butler/Pennoyer Sr. b. 1575/80
Richard Butler v. 1582
John Butler b. 1583/84
John Butler m. Ann
Their child:
Evan Butler Sr.
Evan Butler Sr. m. Johane Penoyer
Their children:
Catorn Butler b. abt. 1640
Evan Butler Jr.
Walter Butler b. 1644
Going back to Robert Butler/Pennoyer Sr.
Robert Butler/Pennoyer Sr. m. 1st Elizabeth Chambers b. abt 1580
Their children:
Samuel Penoyer b. 1602
William Pennoyer b. 3 Feb 1604/05
Robert Butler/Pennoyer m. 2nd Alice Rogers
Their children:
Robert Pennnoyer Jr. b. abt 21 Nov 1614
Elinor Pennoyer b. 1619/23
Thomas Pennoyer b. abt 1624
William Pennoyer m. (unknown)
Had:
Johane Penoyer
Johane Penoyer m. her cousin Evan Butler, son of Thomas Butler and had the three children listed above.
Getting to Catorn:
Catorn Butler was married three times.
Catorn Butler m. bef 1664 1st: Samuel Robburds b. abt. 1638, d. aft 1688
Their children:
William Robburds, b. 1664
Samuel D. Robburds III b. 1666
John Robburds b. 1668
Catorn Butler m. 2nd: aft 1668, Leete
There were no children from this union
Catorn Butler m. 3rd: 8 Oct 1673, Thomas Wetmore b. 1615, d. 11 Dec 1681
Their children:
Mehabell Wetmore
Benjamin Wetmore
Abigail Wetmore
Hannah Wetmore
The information on her two marriages to Roberts/Robburds and Wetmore are taken from her will. Catherine/Catorn was b. abt. 1640/42 and d. Oct 1693 and her will was made 20 Oct 1693 proved Middletown, Middlesex, Conn and filed with Hartford District Probate.
Have rest of research and will provide it later.
